Jan wordt voogd over dedrie jongste kinderen en wordt bijgestaan door Servaas Lotsy, secretaris van de gemeente Dordrecht. De zes kinderen blijven wonen aan de Voorstraat D 310 te Dordt. 14-09-1825 komt het tot een verdeling en scheiding van de boedel. Ieder kind krijft een zesde deel, ongeveer 15.320,60 gulden, naast enkele goederen.

    Jan Willem studeert medicijnen en schrijft brieven aan zijn ouders over deze periode.13-10-1811: Zijn ontgroening heeft plaats gevonden. Het is meer verdriet dan vermaak geweest. Hij moest een eligie uit Ovidius overzetten. Keizer Napoleon wordt in Leiden verwacht. Hij hoort over het bombardement van de Fransen op de stad Dordt en plundering van Woerden. Hij ontloopt de dienstplicht , voor 160 gulden werd een plaatsvervanger gevonden en kon Jan Willem Grimm zijn studie afmaken. Dit wordt 15-01-1814 opgetekend bij notaris Struyk. November 1815 promotie in de medicijnen. Hij krijgt een dokterspraktijk in Dordrecht. In de familie veel sterfgevallen. In 1832 wordt hij conrector aan het gymnasium te Dordt. 12-12-1832 houdt hij bij zijn intrede een oratio in het Latijn. Hij gaat opnieuw studeren, wetenschap der wijsbegeerte. In 1837 promotie, dokter in de philosophiae theore ticae magister et litratum humaniorum.
