Het lukt niet een goed lopende boekhandel op te zetten. Op 21-08-1847 wordt het huis met inboedel geveild. Het gezin verhuist naar Maarssen en begint een snoepwinkeltje.

Bram en zijn gezin ontvluchten Dordrecht. Met het weinige geld dat over is koopt Bram een huis in Barneveld.

    Bram logeert samen met Simon Noorda bij de ouders van Noordaa in Dinther bij Den Bosch en gaat met de trekschuit van Den Boschy naar Dordrecht weer naar huis. Simon Noordaa schrijft in een brief overdeze reis. In Dordt aangekomen, brengt hijt Bram door de kermis drukte naar huis. De origenele brieven liggen in het archief Kroon in Het CBG te Den Haag.

    Op veertienjarige leeftijd overlijdt zijn moeder ,M.E. Birn. Bram gaat niet studeren na de lagere school, maar krijgt les van een tekenmeester en dan werken bij een boekhandelaar. Van zijn geérfd kapitaal begint hijv een eigen boekhandel en boekbinderij.
