Op het kerkhof te Surhuisterveen ligt een grafsteen waarop gebeitelt staat : Den 13-11-1643 os overleden de eerwaarde en godzalige Gabbe Pualus bedienaar bij de Waterlandsche doopsgezinde gemeente van Surhuisterveen 72 jaar.
Naast deze steen is een ander van zijn vrouw die in het volgende jaar is overleden in evenhooge ouderdom.
Zij schijnen volgens de stenen menschen van aanzien geweest te zijn, in de jaren van den Leraar pleiten wel voor den vroegen oorsprong der gemeente.
Het wapen van Gabbe is: rechts de Friese Adelaar , Linksboven de Eikel, en Linksonder het Klaverblad.

Gabe Paulus moet zeker omstreeks 1620 zijn ambt al uitgeoefend hebben. Bij de verkoop van een huis met
plantage in 1620 blijkt namelijk dat van Gabe Paulus ten noordoosten daarvan te liggen. In hetzelfde jaar worden
Gabe en zijn vrouw vermeld in hetHypotheekboek, terwijl Gabe als curator over minderjarige wezen als arbiter rees
in 1607 genoemd wordt. Hij moet dus wel tot de eerste bewoners van de jonge veenkolonie worden gerekend.]
