Gabe Paulus moet zeker omstreeks 1620 zijn ambt al uitgeoefend hebben. Bij de verkoop van een huis met plantage in 1620 blijkt namelijk dat van Gabe Paulus ten noordoosten daarvan te liggen. In hetzelfde jaar worden Gabe en zijn vrouw vermeld in hetHypotheekboek, terwijl Gabe als curator over minderjarige wezen als arbiter rees in 1607 genoemd wordt. Hij moet dus wel tot de eerste bewoners van de jonge veenkolonie worden gerekend.]
