Notes about Harvey A Schipper

Harvey A. Schipper, age 83, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born on May 14, 1930, at home north of Aplington the son of Andrew and Lena (Johnson) Schipper. He attended Ripley Township #8 country school near his home.

On January 10, 1950, Harvey was united in marriage with Esther M. Meyer at her parents’ home north of Kesley, Iowa. They made their home for a couple of years north of Aplington, until they moved to a farm 4 miles north of Aplington, where they lived the next 58 years. Harvey was a devote farmer who also raised livestock including dairy cows. He proudly drove his bright red International Harvester Tractors until retirement and moved to town in Parkersburg.

He was a lifelong member of Bethel Reformed Church, rural Aplington, where he served as Deacon on the Consistory, taught Sunday school and sang in the church choir. He shared his love of music with Esther singing duets at special occasions and he also sang during funerals.

Harvey enjoyed attending farm sales and watching sporting events on television, particularly football and baseball. One of his hobbies included welding using everyday items such as an old satellite dish or metal paint tray into birdbaths and bird feeders. Harvey’s golf mannequin that was always in their front yard, usually brought lots of conversation that he took in good spirit. He loved traveling with Ester throughout the years including two cruises to the Bahamas, Germany, Hawaii and all across the United States. Lately a highlight was going for dinner with Esther and socializing with everyone. Most importantly was his faith in God, his sense of humor, good joking nature, especially if he could pull a good one on Esther, and perhaps his time spent together with his family.

Harvey died Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Katherine Aalderks, Anna Marks and Helena Eilderts; and four brothers, George, John, Andrew, and Henry Schipper.
Harvey is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Esther Schipper of Parkersburg; four children, Irene (Tom) Faber of Kensett, IA, Linda (Russ) Wibben of Victoria, MN, Verlyn (Janie) Schipper of Aplington, and LuAnn (Wayne) Green of Waverly; 11 grandchildren, Jason (Melissa) Rollene, Melissa (Josh) Shoopman, Ryan (Amy) Rollene, Justin (Beth) Faber, Kristi (Nick) Luger, Josh (Sarah) Wibben, Brandon (Lesa) Schipper, Brittany (Yasir) Elhawi, Bryce Schipper, Joe (Kyndra) Green and Jen (Ryan) Houselog; 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul (Irma) Schipper of Parkersburg, and Lee (Dorothy) Schipper of Aplington; two sisters, Grace (Don) Huisman of Wellsburg, and Hattie Behrends of Wellsburg; three sisters-in-law, Albertha Schipper of Cedar Falls, Arlene Steinmeyer of Grundy Center, and Pauline Meyer of Allison; one brother-in-law, Harold (Joan) Meyer of North Liberty; and many nieces and nephews.
