Jan werd ook smid en werkte aanvankelijk in het bedrijf van zijn broer Gerrit . Na nog een andere baas elders gehad te hebben, koos hij ook om zelfstandig te zijn. In het midden van de dertiger jaren vestigde hij zich ook als smid iets verderop aan de Klapperdijk. Na een moeilijke start - hij moest als dienstplichtige tijdens de mobilisatie in het leger – heeft hij het bedrijf met voortvarendheid uitgebouwd. Naast de metaalbewerking was hij fietsenmaker, installateur en loodgieter waarvoor hij ook medewerkers in dienst had. Ook voorzag hij Wapenveld en omgeving jarenlang van flessengas als groothandelaar.
