Arend bouwde en exploiteerde in Wapenveld met zijn duitse vrouw Katharina Burghardt het stationskoffiehuis "Café zum Bahnhof"
Zijn vrouw had heimwee en het gezin ging weer terug naar Duitsland, naar Vohwinkel en hij was weer arbeidsbemiddelaar.
Na de duitse crisis na WO I kwam hij voorgoed terug naar Nederland in Utrecht waar zijn dochter woonde, stierf hij op 03-04-1937
