Achternaam wordt ook vaak gespeld als 'MERKI'. De oorsprong van de naam ligt wellicht in de Franse aanspreektitel c.q. achternaam 'Marquis', maar is onzeker. Er wordt al in 1589 een Petrus MARCI geboren in Breda, een verre voorvader van Wilhelmina, dus of het van oorsprong een Franse naam is, blijft onzekrr.

Uit de ondertekening van de huwelijksakte blijkt dat Wilhelmina het schrijven niet machtig was. Bij het huwelijk erkenden Petrus en Wilhelmina ook twee kinderen als de hunne, zijnde Johannes Merki, geboren in 1857, en Adrianus Franciscus Merki, geboren in 1862.
