Uit de ondertekening van de huwelijksakte blijkt dat Petrus het schrijven niet machtig was. Bij zijn huwelijk was hij ook 'zonder beroep'. De reden voor dat analfabetisme wordt genoemd in de geboorteakte van zijn zoon Petrus Wilhelmus van 14 maart 1871. Daarin verklaart Petrus dat hij blind is, en daarom de akte niet kan tekenen.

Bij het huwelijk erkenden Petrus en Wilhelmina ook twee kinderen als de hunne, zijnde Johannes Merki, geboren in 1857, en Adrianus Franciscus Merki, geboren in 1862.
