Notes about Cornelis Jans de With

In het boek "Hilvarenbeek onder de hertog en de generaliteit"
vermeld Adriaenssen op pag 41, dat
CORNELIS DE WITH op 2 februari 1609 werd gedoopt als zoon van Jan
Willems de With de oude, schepen van Hilvarenbeek, en van Peeterken
Wouter Peter Nouwen, die aan de Kleine Westerwijk woonden.
In 1631-1635 studeerde hij te Leuven als eerste gebruiker van de
door Cornelis Poppelius (1565) gestichte beurs: immatrikulatie op
23 januari 1631, promotie tot artium licentiatus op 16 november
1632. Hij behaalde de graad van S.T.L, licentiaat in de theologie.
In 1634 verkreeg hij de beneficies van de Sint-Lambertskapel aan de
Westerwijk en van Sint Joris in de kerk van Hilvarenbeek, die hem
voldoende inkomsten opleverden om tot priester te mogen worden
gewijd. Sinds 18 april 1641 was heer Cornelis deservitor en sinds
2 oktober 1641 pastoor van Waarschoot. In die funktie is hij op
26 mei 1659 overleden. Hij stond bekend als een ijverig pastoor,
deed veel voor de restauratie van kerk en toren, hoewel de middelen
hem ontbraken. Door de uitgestrektheid van zijn parochie (3000
inwoners, 1000 tot 1300 communicanten) kon hij het werk nauweijks
aan, aldus Adriaenssen.
