Ad heeft vanaf zijn 16de tot 1950 bij de Fiat garage in Tilburg gewerkt. Hij begon als monteur en klom op tot chef-monteur. In 1949 trouwde Ad met An Eijsermans, die in 1947 een melkwinkel annex ijszaak was begonnen. Als bijverdienste begon Ad in de zaak van zijn vrouw frites te verkopen. Het waren geen gewone frites, hij maakte er iets luxe van. Het is dan ook altijd geen gewone friteszaak geweeest, maar een "Ijs- en eetsalon". In 1978 heeft Ad zijn zaak over kunnen doen aan zijn oudste zoon Berry
