zij is opgevoed door tante Johanna Suzanna Charlotte Smijs na het overlijden van haar vader en moeder. Tante (ongetrouwd) was onderwijzeres bij de zusters Ursulinnen. Hanny verbleef daar ook nog met haar twee kinderen Carbaat, totdat ze op aandrang van tante haar man volgde naar Nederland.
In Moederheil werd ze Lia genoemd, omdat er daar al een andere Hanny was.
