Op 28-6-1921 slaagt hij voor de HBS in Winterswijk. Dec. 1923 verloven zij zich in Soerabaja. Op 30-8-1930 wordt hun dochter Hanny in Cheribon geboren. Op 7-10-1904 staat in de krant dat zijn moeder een zoon krijgt in Soerabaja (J.Ch.F. Smijs-Braun). In 1921 (krant van 11-9) vertrok de weduwe J. Smijs-Braun met 2 zoons en een dochter vanuit Rotterdam naar Ned.-Indië
