Notes about Johan Smijs

Dit de juiste Johan, zie ik op de persoonskaart van zoon Willem. Hij wordt geboren in Borculo en gaat volgens een krantenbericht op 17 febr. 1883 naar Indie. Met een zekere Jacob Bieber, een schoenmaker (NB de vader van Johan was ook schoenmaker) richt hij een zaak op in 1895 Bieber en Co: een tokozaak in dranken, schoenen en laarzen in Malang. In nov. 1900 verloven ze zich (J. Smijs, Soerabaja) Johan krijgt wegens ziekte verlof naar Europa te gaan op 9 juli 1920. Volgens de scheepsberichten in de kranten gaat hij dan ook met z'n gezin naar Winterswijk met het s.s. Jan Pieterszoon Coen. Op 20 aug. 1920 waren ze in Amsterdam. Opmerkelijk: bij de ontscheping staat mw J. Smijs en 3 kinderen. Uit een briefje dat zijn kleindochter Hanny Smijs schrijft, blijkt dat hij onderweg aan buiktyfus is overleden en op de Rode Zee overboord is gezet.  Op 12-9-1921 zie ik dat mevr. wed. Smijs-Braun met 2 zonen en een dochter op weer naar Indie gaat.  De overlijdens doorgekeken van 1920 en 1921 in Winterswijk en Borculo, maar Johan daarin niet gevonden. (jan. 2021). Overlijden aan boord van een schip moete gemeld worden bij de BS in Den Haag. De aktes daar zijn wsh verloren gegaan in WO II.

Uit de persoonskaart van Willem Smijs blijkt dat dit inderdaad de juiste Johan is.
