Johannes Bernardus moest bij het aangaan van zijn huwelijk een verklaring overleggen, dat hij aan de militaire plicht had voldaan. Hiervoor werd een verklaring overlegd van de Nationale Militie, Noord Holland. Zijn nummer was 3275,3kl 2e regiments infanterie. Op het Certificaat van de Nationale Militie Noord Holland wordt ook een persoonsbeschrijving van Johannes Bernardus gegeven:

Het gezin kreeg 13 kinderen. Zes kinderen overleden op zeer jeugdige leeftijd. Elk jaar werd er een kind geboren of ging er een kind dood.
