Johannes is gekeurd voor de Nationale Militie. Zijn lengte is 1,77 meter. Hij wordt op 06-06-1916 geschikt verklaard voor de Nationale Militie. Op 29-06-1917 wordt hem één jaar vrijstelling verleend. Dit wordt herhaald op 29-08-1918, 10-09-1919, 09-12-1921, 30-12-1922, 30-12-1923 vrijstelling voor twee jaar. Op 30-12-1925 wordt hij voorgoed vrijgesteld van de Nationale Militie. Op 26-09-1917 komt hij aan op Ellis Island, Amerika met het schip Hollandia vanuit Amsterdam, waar hij op 07-09-1917 was vertrokken. Hij is op doortocht naar Oost Indië namens het bedrijf Fles en Co. Zijn beroep is klerk (bron: www.ellisisland.org). Hij verblijft er mogelijk tot 1920. Op 10-01-1920 staat hij op de passagierslijst van het schip J.P. Coen, dat uit Batavia was vertrokken (krant NRC). Op 12 februari komt hij in Amsterdam aan (krant Vaderland).
Op 25-09-1930 treed Johannes Dijst op als gevolgmachtige voor de broer van Josephina, George Frederik Bordes, die op dat moment verblijft in Nederlands Indië, Weltevreden, gemeente Batavia. om het huwelijk te sluiten tussen George Frederik Bordes en Hientiëtta Brons. Johannes Dijst is bestuurder in Nederland van de firma Charles Herincx te Amsterdam.
