Notes about Joannes Franciscus Antonius "Antoon" Dohmen

Hij was burgemeester van Meerssen van 1909 tot 1924. Hij heeft om gezondheidsredenen in 1924 ontslag gevraagd en gekregen. In Meerssen is (nog in 2013) een Burgemeester Dohmenstraat. Er bestaat van hem een foto uit 1924 waarin hij de ambtsketen draagt. Hij had zelf geen kinderen, zijn vrouw wél, die was weduwe van (haar eerste man), Hubert Jakob Karel Frans Frische, waarmee ze twee zonen had.
In 1893 is bij notaris Lienaerts te Merkelbeek een akte opgesteld door hem (toen wonend te Roermond) en zijn zuster Maria Paulina (toen wonend in 's-Gravenhage) "over de inschrijving tegen hunnen gewezen voogd Jan Mathijs Dohmen". Wat dat precies inhield is niet bekend want de akte zélf ontbreekt in het archief van de notaris. Antoon en zijn zuster waren bij het overlijden van hun beide ouders in 1880 nog minderjarig. Toen is kennelijk hun oom Jan Mathijs (Joannes Mathias) Dohmen als hun voogd aangesteld. Deze laatste overleed in 1894.
In 1887 ondertekent hij "onderwijzer wonend te Roermond" een schuldbekentenis aan de "Roomsch Catholijke Kerkfabriek der Gemeente Merkelbeek" voor een lening van dfl 300,- met als onderpanden 1 stuk land te Merkelbeek, 1 huis met schuur, stal en tuin "aan de heide" te Schinveld en een aantal (ca 24) percelen bouwland en boomgaard te Schinveld.
In 1888 ondertekent hij wederom een schuldbekentenis aan de "Roomsch Catholijke Kerkfabriek der Gemeente Merkelbeek" voor een lening van dfl 200,- met dezelfde onderpanden als boven vermeld.
Antoon laat in 1918, via een machtiging aan de notaris zijn bezittingen in Schinveld via een openbare veiling verkopen. Het betreft 7 percelen grond te Schinveld en 1 perceel te Merkelbeek. Zijn oomzeggende neef Jan Michael Diederen koopt één perceel namens zijn moeder (Antoons zuster) Maria Agnes Dohmen .
In de "Limburger Koerier Maastricht" van 5 augustus 1925 stond het navolgende bericht van het overlijden van Antoon.
"Oud-Burgemeester Dohmen van Meerssen.
Op 66-jarigen leeftijd overleed te Roermond dhr. J.F.A. Dohmen, oud-burgemeester van Meerssen. Wijlen dhr. Dohmen had zich in de gemeente Meerssen tallooze vrienden gemaakt en wist de belangen van zijn gemeentenaren steeds met warmte te behartigen.
Een geschohte gezondheid noopte den gezienen burgervader het vorig jaar ontslag te nemen uit zijn bestuursambt, waarbij nog eens overduidelijk bleek van de sympathie van Meerssens bevolking.
Thans heeft de dood een te vroeg einde aan zijn leven gemaakt.
