UEM is afgeleid van Uhm van de Duitse plaats Uedem in de kreis Kleef. Bij de volkstelling van 1947 kwam Van Uhm
43 keer voor in Gelderland waarvan twintig keer in Bergh. Andere varianten van deze families waarvan voorouders uit Uedem afkomstig zijn: Van Uem en Van Uum. Van Uem kwam in 1947 in Gelderland 62 keer
voor, waarvan drie in Bergh, vijftien in Gendringen en elf in Zevenaar. Van Uum kwam toen in Gelderland
164 keer voor, waarvan Bergh 41 en Zevenaar 67.

Stokkum is de bakermat van de Berghse Van Uhms en varianten. Dat blijkt uit een brochure die is uitgegeven
door de Stichting voor Genealogie en Geschiedenis tussen Rijn en IJssel. In het archief van Huis Bergh komt
een Derick van Uum voor die bevelhebber van het Huis Bergh was. Wilhelm graaf van den Bergh beveelt hem
in 1582 alle overheidspersonen in het graafschap Bergh aan te zeggen, geen contributien meer aan de vijand
te betalen.

Stamvader Gerrit van Uem uit ongeveer 1680 komt uit Stokkum bij de Duitse grens bij 's Heerenberg. Dit grensgebied van de gemeente Bergh is tot de 20ste eeuw afwisselend Hollands en Pruisisch gebied.

Van Uhm, Uem, Uum, Derk, boer, geb. 1747; Antoon, Jan, (beide zoons van Derk), Wessel, boer, geb. 1766; Antoon, kleine boer, de schrijfwijze varieert maar zal, gezien de herkomst van de naam zelf niets veranderen. Het is in Bergh een oeroude familiedie reeds wordt vermeld in het archief van Huis Bergh in 1582 als Derk van Uhm, die bevelhebber is op het kasteel. De naam is afgeleid van het stadje Uedem, 4000 inwoners, tussen Kalkar en Kevelaer en deze plaats op haar beurt ontieende zijn naam aan een stam- vader Udo die daar een leengoed bezat dat dateerde uit de tijd v66r Karel de Grote.

Zo staan zoon Dominicus /Daan/ uit 1747 en zijn vrouw Johanna Jansen uit ong. 1750 ingeschreven in Emmerik.
Later verhuizen zij naar de gemeente Gendringen, alwaar Daan bekend staat als akkerbouwer/voerman,
evenals zoon Arend uit 1790.
Berend van Uum uit 1826 en en Jan van Uem uit 1851 staan beschreven als dagloners in de akker- en landbouw.

Hierna volgt dan de Jan van Uem, die bekend wordt als een van de Veldwachters van
Zevenaar. Zijn vrouw Maria Witjes wordt na haar geboorte in 1893 aangegeven bij de
toenmalige ambtenaarvan de burgelijke stand in Bergh, de burgemeester , de baron van
Hugenpoth tot Aerdt.
