De familienaam Nass ontwikkelde zich mogelijk uit de familienaam Nassauer <http://www.meertens.nl>.
Dit toponiem is tevens herkomstnaam en verwijst naar de stad of het land Nassau. Van Nassauer ging
de naam over op Nasse en Nasche(tweede naamvalsvorm, zoals Friese van Friesland), waarna onder
andere de vormen Nass, Nas en Nassen ontstonden. Het Nassause land ligt oostelijk van de Midden-Rijn
en noordelijk van de Main in Duitsland. De oorsprong van de naam Nassau is onbekend. Nassau is ontstaan
uit enkele van de oude gouwen, waarin het Frankische rijk verdeeld is geweest. Een van de belangrijkste
gouwen was de Lahn-gouw, die onderverdeeld was in de neder- en boven Lahn gouw. Aan de linker oever
van de rivier de Lahn ligt het dorp Nassau, dat voor het eerst in 915 als een hof van koning Konrad I van Duitsland wordt vernoemd. Aan de rechteroever van de neder-Lahn werd nadien een kasteel gebouwd,
dat de naam van het dorp overnam.
Het kan ook zijn dat de familienaam verwijst naar het plaatsje Nassen, dat ten Noorden van Koblenz ligt.
Recent onderzoek heeft uitgewezen, dat een familie Nass/Nassen in het Kleverland afkomstig is uit de omstreken van Koblenz (1700).
De familienaam Nass komt al in de veertiende eeuw in de Duffelt voor. In een schattingslijst van het Hertogdom Gelre uit 1369 is ‘in Dufele onder Keken ende Bymmen’ Willam Nasche schatplichtig.
Ook later vindt men in de Duffelt maar ook elders in Duitsland de naam.
In 1423 wordt in Neunkirchen (D.) Dietrich Nasse genoemd. In 1461 komt een Nasemann voor in ambt
Burbach en in 1486 treedt daar ene Henne Naissmans op als schepen. De Dillenburger Renterekeningen
van 1458/59 bevatten o.a. de hamersmid Naseman.
In Amt Netphen leeft tussen 1583 en 1600 Hans Nasse, wiens vader waarschijnlijk Hen Nassauer was,
die als zodanig wordt aangeduid tussen 1566 en 1572.
In 1645 wordt Henrick Nassen genoemd bij de erfdeling aan Agnes Maria van Pallandt uit het Huis zu Dinslaken. Haar valt onder meer toe ‘das Koppelkempjen gegenüber Henrich Nassen’ in het Neyenvelt onder Dinslaken <http://www.historischekringbemmel.nl/genea/famnamen/nas/oorsprong.htm>.
Mogelijk dat de familienaam Nees/Neesen die ook in het Duffeltse gebied voorkomt dezelfde oorsprong heeft.
