    Deze steeg dankt zijn naam aan het Cellebroedersklooster, dat in 1441 werd gesticht. Naast het klooster lag het Bagijnenhof. Tussen beide gebouwen liep een steeg, die reeds in 1366, dus voor de stichting van beide instellingen, voorkomt onder de naam Gijsbrecht Boekel- of Bokelsteeg. In 1491 en 1492 heette deze straat, die van de Oppert naar de Delftsevaart liep, Broertgenstrate; later Broerhuissteeg. Sinds het midden van de 16de eeuw treft men de namen Cellebroers- of Cellitensteeg aan. De naam Cellebroerssteeg werd verkort tot Broedersteeg. Het gedeelte ten westen van de Lange Torenstraat werd Wijde Broedersteeg, terwijl het gedeelte ten oosten van deze straat Nauwe Broedersteeg werd genoemd. Het Cellebroedersklooster werd in 1592 ingericht als Latijnse School. De steeg heette daarom ook wel Latijnsche Schoolsteeg.
