Notes about Laurens Bastiaan "Rens" Fluijt

Dirk Pieter Fluijt, vader van Laurens Bastiaan, was eigenaar van een tjalk waarmee hij in het voorjaar en de zomer met een eigen wafel- en poffertjeskraam naar de kermissen ging. De rest van het jaar voer hij met aardappelen vanuit Zeeland naar België, vaak naar Brussel. Daar verkocht hij de aardappelen per mud aan de frietkramen.
In 1910 is in Wilnis een nieuwe tjalk zijn gebouwd. Dirk Pieter Fluijt heeft de boot "Les Cinq Frères" te genoemd. Later werd de boot overgenomen door zijn zoon Laurens Bastiaan.
Tijdens de mobilisatie van 1914-1918 moesten de vijf zonen in dienst en kwam het bedrijf stil te liggen. De wafel- en poffertjeskraam is toen verkocht.
In 1935 moest er een nieuwe motor geplaatst worden. Dat gebeurde bij de scheepswerf ’t Kromhout in Amsterdam. Daarvoor moest de hypotheek verhoogd worden.
Op woensdag 25 augustus 1937 brak er brand aan boord uit. De lading vlas vatte vlam door de heten uitlaat. De brand kon snel geblust worden. Een deel van het vlas was verbrand en het schip had schade opgelopen.
Doordat er in de crisisjaren minder vracht was, was de hypotheek niet meer op te brengen. Vanaf september 1938 kwam de boot stil te liggen in Amsterdam en is in december 1940 bij een openbare verkoop verkocht.

Op de website van de Landelijke Vereniging tot Behoud van het Historisch Bedrijfsvaartuig (of LVBHB) staat een Excel bestand waarin staat dat de boot Les Cinq Frères als eigenaar had D.B. Fluijt met als woonplaats Middelharnis. De boot is een motortjalk van staal gemaakt door H. Haring te Wilnis in 1910. De boot was 20,63 meter lang en 4,32 meter breed en mat 75,324 ton. Omdat George Snijder deze gegevens heeft overgenomen van handgeschreven registers, is het waarschinlijk dat de eigenaar D.P. Fluijt moet zijn geweest en niet D.B. Fluijt.
