Notes about Laurens Ketting

Op 7 januari 1885 deed de kantonrechter te Sommelsdijk uitspraak over het vermoedelijke overlijden van Laurens Ketting.

Na het horen van 4 getuigen werd het volgende verhaal opgetekend:
In november 1864 is van Middelharnis uitgezeild de vissersloep "Aplonia" met als stuurman Maarten Langbroek en nog twaalf manschappen aan boord, waaronder ook de matroos Laurens Ketting.
Sindsdien is van de sloep en de bemanning niets meer vernomen. Het is aan te nemen dat de sloep de 3e december 1864 ter hoogte van Egmond aan Zee, met man en muis is vergaan, waarbij ook Laurens Ketting is overleden.
Het gerucht ging namelijk dat de sloep, tegelijk met de visskersloep Eben-Haëzer, op die datum voor Egmond aan Zee zou zijn vergaan
Dit is waarschijnlijk omdat het wrakhout van de "Aplonia" te Egmond aan Zee is opgevist.
De kantonrechter maakte hiervan een "Akte van bekendheid" op die de dochter Jannetje Ketting nodig had bij haar huwelijk "ten einde het ontbreken der akte van overlijden haar vaders te verhelpen"

Het Streekarchief Goeree-Overflakkee schrijft: "In de periode 1860-1914 vergaan veertien Middelharnisse schepen, waarbij 121 vissers zijn verdronken. Ook slaan er zo nu en dan vissers overboord of komen om bij andere ongelukken aan boord. De vis wordt duur betaald."
