Notes about Martinus Bernouw (Barnouw)

Granen waren een belangrijke grondstof voor de jeneverindustrie. Om er op toe te zien dat de handel daarin ;eerlijk verliep werd er in vroeger tijden door het stadsbestuur een graan- of korenmeter aangesteld. Deze functie bekleedden Martinus Barnouw (geb. 1778) en zijn zoon Nicolaas(1808-1880).

Korenmeters controleerden of de standaardmaat van een partij graan juist was. Ook werd het nettogewicht per hectoliter gemeten. Korenmeters hielden tevens toezicht op de graanlevering, bepaalden en noteerden de aangevoerde hoeveelheden en de te betalen accijns.  

De korenmeter gebruikte een schepel (een houten schop om graan te scheppen), een strekel (een stok om een met graan gevulde ton af te strijken)
en een wan (een schaalvormige mand om het kaf van het koren te zuiveren).De wan had waarschijnlijk de inhoud van een schepel (25 liter). De uitdrukking "Aan de strijkstok blijven hangen" stamt af van het afstrijken van een standaardmaat met een strekel bij de verkoop van graan.

Korenmeters hadden hun eigen gilde. Deze werd soms samengevoegd met gilden van verwante beroepen zoals korenzetters en korendragers.
