Boter bij de vis

 

In huize Bernouw verscheen in het verleden nogal eens een visje, in de Maas gevangen door ome Gert Jaarsveld. Voor de letterlijke en figuurlijke 'boter bij de vis' zorgde pa Freek Bernouw, want hij werkte 28 jaar bij de boterfabriek van Van den Bergh & Jurgens in Rotterdam.

 

De fabriek maakt nu deel uit van het Unilever-concern. Dit bedrijf is voortgekomen uit de activiteiten van de twee Nederlandse concurrerende margarineproducenten Anton Jurgens en Simon van den Bergh. Zij besloten in 1927 hun krachten te bundelen en samen te gaan in de Margarine Unie.

De derde pijler werd gevormd door William Hesketh Lever, een groothandelaar in kruidenierswaren, die o.a. Sunlight zeep op de markt bracht.

Het Nederlandse margarinebedrijf Margarine Unie en de Britse zeepfabrikant Lever Brothers besloten in 1930 te fuseren. Unilever was geboren. De fusie was zinvol, omdat beide bedrijven elkaar beconcurreerden
om dezelfde grondstoffen, beide zich bezighielden met marketing op grote schaal van producten voor huishoudelijk gebruik en beide gebruik maakten van soortgelijke distributiekanalen.

 

Unilever groeide uit tot een wereldconcern, als het grootste bedrijf in 'fast moving consumer goods' in de Benelux. In Nederland brengen ze zo’n 40 bekende merken op de markt. Deze merken vertegenwoordigen een uiteenlopend assortiment producten onder merknamen als Axe, Becel, Bertolli, Biotex, Blue Band, Calvé, Cif, Conimex, Dove, Glorix, Hertog, Knorr, Lipton, Neutral, OLA, OMO, Prodent, Unox, Zendium en Zwitsal.

Tot 2008 had Unilever zes fabrieken in Nederland. Dat zijn er in 2015 nog drie, waaronder de Blue Band & Calvé aan de Nassaukade te Rotterdam, de fabriek voor productie van margarine en pindakaas. Het opvallende kantoor bovenop de fabriek werd overigens pas in 2004 gerealiseerd.

Bij Unilever in Nederland werken ruim 3.100 mensen.

 

Freek Bernouw werkte vanaf 6 juli 1954 bij Van den Bergh & Jurgens. Volgens een boekje dat ter gelegenheid van zijn 25-jarig jubileum werd gemaakt was hij 'insteker retourmargarine' bij de Afdeling Filterpersen. Zijn werkgever stuurde een afvaardiging naar Hoenzadriel om een jubileumgeschenk te overhandigen. 

De werkzaamheden werden uitgevoerd in een 3-ploegendienst. Dat kostte af en toe wel eens wat moeite, maar Freek deed het niet echt met tegenzin.  Menigmaal fietste hij fluitend naar Kerkdriel, om vandaar met de bus naar het westen te reizen. Hij keek er later ook met veel plezier op terug. "Ik heb daar veel verdiend en weinig hard gewerkt."

Naast zijn werk in Rotterdam verkocht hij in Hoenzadriel een tijd olie en klompen. Verder bewerkte hij verspreid liggende stukken grond voor groente en bloemen. En daar waren er ook nog eens varkens, geiten en kippen. Ook konijnen, wiens afgestroopt vel wel eens wat lang in de schuur bleef hangen tot de opkoper ze kwam halen. Van de extra 'boter bij de vis' kon gespaard worden, bijvoorbeeld voor het opknappen van het huis of voor de aanschaf van een elektronisch orgel.
