Overleden aan darmkanker (familiair?) waar ook grootvader Arij en zuster Wijntje aan zijn overleden. Zusters Janie en Gré diverse malen behandeld. Waarschijnlijk heeft hij de symtomen verwaarloosd. Na de (geslaagde)operatie is wegens bestraling darmverkleving opgetreden en is daaraan overleden.
In het kader van de z.g. verplichte arbeitseinsatz (tewerkstelling) in Duitsland heeft hij 3 jaar in Mulhacker in het Zwarte woud gewerkt. Opgenomen bij familie van zijn tante Hermine Bastemeijer -  Wohlgemuth. Hij was de oogappel van zijn moeder, voor haar was het een vreselijke tijd die absoluut niet heeft meegedragen aan haar welzijn.
Arie was een heel lieve, zorgzame echtgenoot en vader. Ook stond hij altijd voor een ander klaar.
Zoon Pieter (Peter) heeft een mannelijke nakomeling genaamd Niels.
Pieter (Peter) is vernoemd naar de vader van zijn moeder Pieter 't Hart. Marijke Leentje is vernoemd naar de moeder van Arie. Arjan's naam is een samentrekking van Arie en Jan. Zijn 2e naam is een vernoeming naar zijn oom Bastiaan Leendert.
