Hij streed met zijn vader en zijn broers in de slag bij Bouvines en werd er gevangengenomen. Na zijn vrijlating was hij een belangrijk vertrouweling van gravin Johanna van Constantinopel. Begraven in de abdij van Affligem. Gehuwd met Sophia van Breda en Schooten (ca. 1187 - na 1237). Na zijn dood werd de familiebezittingen verdeeld over zijn eigen kinderen en zijn neef Raas VII.
