Hij was aanvankelijk, samen met Arnulf IV van Oudenaarde, een tegenstander van Ferrand van Portugal, maar werd diens medestander nadat deze zijn Fransgezinde politiek herzag. Hij werd evenals Ferrand gevangengenomen in de Slag bij Bouvines (1214). Gehuwd met Clarisse van Herzele.
