    Ruines du château de Grimbergen

    La "guerre de Grimbergen" commencée vers 1142 sous son père n'est pas terminée lorsqu'il lui succède. Cette lutte soutenue par les Berthout est, en réalité, la lutte des comtes de Louvain, ducs de Basse-Lotharingie contre les prétentions des grands seigneurs du Brabant à l'indépendance.

    Après près de vingt années de batailles, Godefroid III de Louvain, landgrave de Brabant, se voit forcé d'attaquer à nouveau les Berthout, et cette fois leur château-forteresse de Grimbergen est ruiné en 1159, mettant fin à ce qu'il est convenu d'appeler "la guerre de Grimbergen".
