    Samen met zijn tweelingbroer Berengar Raymond II, volgde hij in 1076 zijn vader op als graaf van Barcelona, maar al spoedig werd het gebied, tégen de wens van hun overleden vader in, tussen de twee broers verdeeld.

    Raymonds bijnaam refereert aan zijn dik gekleurd haar (estopa zijn ruwe vezels die achterblijven in de hekel bij het spinnen van de vlasdraad). In 1082 werd hij door zijn tweelingbroer tijdens de jacht vermoord.
