    Adelbert was een oorlogszuchtig vorst en gaf zich over aan wreedheden die, zelfs in de tijdgeest van toen, uitzonderlijk waren. Zo stak hij de abdij van Lesterp, waarin zijn vijanden hun toevlucht hadden gezocht, in brand waardoor ruim 1700 mensen omkwamen. Toch had hij ook de naam een verstandig man te zijn en een rechtschapen rechtspreker. De graaf van Poitiers zou geregeld een beroep op zijn oordeel gedaan hebben.
