When the tithe was taken in Sydling St. Nicholas, in 1841, Robert Sherren owned and occupied five plots close together and by the road through the village. These had a total area of about four acres and included a meadow, a pasture, a house, barn and orchard plus another house and garden, with a meadow and orchard nearby. Robert also owned, but had let to John Devenish, about fifty acres of arable and pasture land. This was at a short distance from where Robert was living. John Devenish was Robert's cousin, a grandson of Robert's uncle, John Sherren. Comparing the tithe map and a fairly modern map of the village we could see that the land owned and occupied by Robert equated completely with what was known until recently, as Sherrin's Farm. In an introduction to the History of Sydling, St. Nicholas in Dorset, by L.G.W. & G.M. Hudson, it states: " Saxon settlement in the 7th and 8th centuries led to the development of strip farming, traces of which were to be found at Sherrin's Farm as late as the 1950's. Each householder was allocated his share of strips, sometimes quite scattered, the dwellings being grouped in the village". In the 1851 census return at West Street, Sydling, were: Robert Sherren, 80, landed proprietor born Sydling; Jane 55, domestic duties, born Little Bredy; plus a servant. There is a headstone in the churchyard there with this wording: Robert Sherren, died 28 December 1856, aged 90, Jane his wife, died 7 June, 1875, aged 93; Joan Sherren died 12 June, 1831, aged 66; also Ann Sherren died 9 May, 1836 aged 76.
