Claudia, her husband Bob and friends Mr. and Mrs. G. T. Nicoll were killed when the car they were riding in was struck by a freight train at a railroad crossing in Port Coldwell, west of Marathon, Ontario at 9:45 A.M. Tuesday, 24 April 1954. Claudia's sister Joan took over the rearing of Derek (9) and Noralea (3), while her brother Pat took Sherren (12) and Tony (8).
