De lotgevallen van Evert en Sjoukje en hun kinderen (Canada) zijn beschreven door hun kleinzoon Edward Clarence in The Tigchelaar Clan a Brief History.

At a young age he worked in the coal mines in Germany, but due to the Spartan working conditions and homesickness he returned to Friesland. Evert and Sjoukje married 1908 and settled in Arum. During WWI Evert bought the till then rented house and farmland. The high mortgage and the post war recession prompted the family to sell everything. Evert and his two oldest sons went to work at the farm of Jan Hoekstra. When Evert in 1928 let his oldest son Klaas (Clarence) go to Canada as a quartermaster, he was reprimanded by the elders of the church. More than a year later Evert and Sjoukje and the other 9 children followed.
