Jacob was een zeer vrome man, stokdoof en toch iedere zondag naar de kerk. Als een patriarch begroette hij waardig neven en nichten, achterneven en achternichten, eigen en aangetrouwd. Communiceerde met lei en krijt. In ca.1904 heeft hij een boerderij laten bouwen in de workumermeerpolder, Trekweg 160 Parrega. 100% doof als gevolg van een val van een hooiberg op ca. 40 jarige leeftijd.
