Aron Levie was born in Almelo as the third of 5 children in the
family. At the ageof 5 he moved with his parents and siblings to
Deventer where his father on 06 March 1812 adopted the family
name of GOUDSMIT. Why Goudsmit (which means goldsmith) is not
clear, as his business was in textiles and leather.
After the death of his father in 1817 the business was carried on
under the name of "the Widow Goudsmit and Sons";as the eldest brother
by that time had already for several years been living at Leiden this
meant Aron and his brother Salomon but it seems they were not very
succesful as businesmen and in 184o the firm went bankrupt.
Aron played an active role in the Jewish Congregation of Deventer;
he was a teacher and during the years 1829-1831 served as a Parnas.
On 05 January 1821 he married his cousin, Henriette Jacob van Raalte,
(their mothers: Helena Magdalena Abrahams and Johanna Abrahams were
sisters; by the way, when a third sister: Hester Abrahams, died in
1819 and her widower: Philip Marcus van Son did not succeed in keeping
the familly together, one of the sons Hartog Philip van Son was taken
in by Aron and his wife and reared and educated by them).
