Notes about Levie Emanuel Goudsmit

Levie Emanuel was born approximately 1744 in Rijssen, apparently as son of Emanuel........(name unknown) and Esther Levie. As we know he had a halfbrother about 12 years his junior, his father probably died when Levie Emanuel was still a young child and his mother subsequently married David Joseph (Meibergen).

Levie Emanuel married Helena Magdalena Hartog ABRAHAMS. On 26 August 1789 he received, together with his small son Manuel and his half- brother Salomon Davids, citizenship of the town of Rijssen.

He was a merchant, dealing in textiles and leather; in 1792 he appeared, together with his afore mentioned halfbrother Salomon Davids before the Magistrate in Rijssen with the request to terminate their joint business, as Salomon was about to be married and intending to move to Almelo. It seems that a few years later Levie Emanuel and family followed him there.

In 1802 Levie Emanuel moved again, now to Deventer, after having received the necessary permission to do so. On 6 March 1812 he adopted for himself and his children the family name of GOUDSMIT. (By a Decree of Napoleon every citizen was compelled to adopt a surname).

Levie Emanuel was active in the organisation of the Jewish

Congregation in Deventer and in 1809, on the occasion of the visit

of King Louis Napoleon to Deventer, he represented the Congregation

together with his brother in law, the parnas Jacob Joel van Raalte

and Joseph Joel van Raalte.
