Aanvankelijk woonde Evert te Voorthuizen in een huis met 97,5 are heide. Na ontginning van de heide tot bouwland werd dit bezit verkocht. Vanaf 1923 had Evert een huis in de buurtschap Appel van de gemeente Nijkerk (Vn.38). Dit verkocht hij in 1930. Evert stichtte in 1923 de houthandel "Kamphorst en Looyen" op het adres Holkersteeg 23 te Nijkerk (Nk.14). In de volksmond stond deze houthandel bekend als "De Houtloods". Na de oorlog kocht Evert zijn financiele partner Looyen uit en droeg hij de houthandel over aan zijn zoon Evert Jan.
