Evert Jan senior liet zich in 1935 als aannemer inschrijven bij de Kamer van Koophandel. Ten behoeve van zijn aannemersbedrijf werd een deel van de houthandel van zijn vader toen ingericht als werkplaats. Vanaf 1949 breidde Evert Jan senior zijn aannemersbedrijf verder uit, waarbij hij zich ging specialiseren in nieuwbouw, verbouw en onderhoud. Het bedrijf kreeg in 1973 de naam "Kamphorst Bouwservice". Na het overlijden van Evert Jan senior in 1974 werd dezaak overgenomen door zijn zoons Ab en Gert. Ook zijn oudste zoon Evert heeft van 1994 tot 1998 in Kamphorst Bouwservice gewerkt.
