'Helena V. Stringfellow 1921 - 2005

Helena V. Stringfellow, 84, of Carlisle, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center.

She was born on Friday, Feb. 18, 1921, in Hanover, a daughter of the late Carl B. Alwood Sr. and Mary A. (Rutters) Alwood.

Helena was a transportation analyst with the Defense Depot in Mechanicsburg and retired after 20 years of service. She was a 1938 graduate of Carlisle High School and a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Carlisle.

She was a past president of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 101 and was a former Girl Scout and Brownie troop leader at her church. She was deeply devoted to her family and enjoyed researching her family genealogy.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert John Stringfellow; two brothers, Carl B. Jr. and Raymond 'Dick' Alwood, who were both killed in action during World War II; and a sister, Patricia Ann Alwood.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Robert Stringfellow; sons, Dr. David A. Stringfellow of Auburn, Ala., and Joseph C. Stringfellow of Clinton, Conn.; a daughter, Virginia M.E. Walker of New Freedom; a brother, William J. Alwoodof Newville; a sister, Betty J. Murphy of Carlisle; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Dec. 31, at 1 p.m. in the St. Patrick Shrine Church, 140 E. Pomfret St., Carlisle, with the Rev. William J. Waltersheid officiating. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery, Carlisle.Visitation will be Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle.
