Earl Gothic "Scotty" Scott, Jr., 82, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, August 25, 2013, after a more than 13-year battle with frontal temporal lobe dementia. Born November 7, 1930, in Indianapolis, he was the son of the late Earl G. Scott, Sr., and the late Sadie V. Scott.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Alice (Farmer) Scott, daughters Debra (Jay) Ruklic and Lori (Eric) Jordan; son Andrew (Tami) Scott; and seven grandchildren: Alyssa and Kacy Ruklic, Abigail (Patrick) Ruklic Aerts, Dr. Scott and Hadley Jordan, and Holly and Sam Scott; sisters Jean (the late Robert) Smith and Carol (the late Donald) Dicks; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved grand-dog, Roxy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Martha Boles, and two grandchildren, Corey Kristin Ruklic and Adam Bryce Jordan.
Scotty was a 1948 graduate of Howe High School, where he met Alice in 1947. He received a BS in biochemistry from Franklin College in 1952 and began 41 years of employment at Eli Lilly & Company, which was interrupted by service in the Army from 1952 to 1954.
Alice and Scotty were married July 25, 1953, in Indianapolis. After moving to Speedway in 1960, Scotty began a "career" of public service as a Republican precinct committeeman in the late 60's to early 80's and a member of the Speedway Cable Television Commission in the early 70's. He was also active in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts with son Andy. He was a 40-year member of the Speedway Lions Club and served as president in 1976-77.
He was a longtime member of the Speedway Christian Church and active in the Speedway Chamber of Commerce. He was named a Melvin Jones Fellow in 1995 for his "dedication to humanitarian services." Scotty enjoyed time spent with his family and woodworking, often combining the two by crafting countless toys and keepsakes for his children and grandchildren. He looked forward to his annual trips to the Smokey Mountains where he would spend hours hiking with his family. At home Scotty enjoyed watching IU Basketball, playing golf and smoking his pipe. He also found time to be a Hockey Goal Judge.
