Russell L Blumeyer died June 20, 2017.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 27th at the funeral home in Newton. Burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.

Russell L. Blumeyer, son of Heiko and Ella (Wieman) Blumeyer, was born March 20, 1924, in George, Iowa. He attended the George Public School and graduated in May of 1941. In the fall of 1941, he started college at the Iowa State Teachers' College in Cedar Falls. After completing the first year and part of the second, he was called into military service in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army for almost three years during WWII in the European Theater of Operations. He was discharged in January of 1946.

Following his military service, he returned to Iowa State Teachers' College graduating in 1948, receiving a B.A. degree. Later he attended Drake University, graduating with a Master's of Education degree. He started his educational and administrative career in 1948. After 38 years serving in a number of Iowa schools, he retired from the State Department of Education in 1986.

In September 1948, he married Lois Louise Stotts. Three children— two sons, Allen and Reggie, and a daughter, Janet— were born. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in September of 2016.

Russell was active in a number of community and educational organizations. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and in other official church positions. Russell also enjoyed gardening and traveling.
