Gary Wieman, 69 of Marion, passed away on Monday, May 21, 2018 surrounded by his family after a three year battle with multiple cancers.

Gary Lee Wieman was born April 1, 1949 (April Fool's Day!) to Earl and Kathryn (Gunderson) Wieman in Sioux Falls, SD.

He graduated from Marion High School in 1967. After high school, Gary attended Sioux Falls College where he met his wife, Carol. He then transferred to Mitchell Vo-Tech receiving a degree in business management in 1969.

In 1970, Gary followed in his dad's footsteps and received his diploma from Reisch World Wide School of Auctioneering in Mason City, IA. After completing auction school, Gary worked for Johnson and Wieman Auctioneers in Sioux Falls from 1970 to 1976. At the same time he worked his way up the ranks of the Sioux Falls Livestock Market, the largest livestock market in the country at the time. In 1976, Gary, along with his dad and his brother, Rich, began Wieman Land & Auction Co. Since then, the company has grown into a fourth generation auction company employing his two sons and two nephews.

Gary married Carol McAmis on April 9, 1971 to which two sons were born. They made their home in Marion, where he proudly lived and worked his entire life. Serving others was important to Gary and through the years, he filled many positions on various boards and organizations in the community.

As a faithful member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church for 50+ years, Gary served as a deacon, teacher, session member and clerk. Recently, he enjoyed organizing POPS, a group for retired church members.

Gary served in the SD National Guard from 1970 to 1976. He continued to promote patriotism through his involvement with the American Legion in Marion.

Gary enjoyed collecting antique items. His favorite collection was his Cockshutt tractors. Papa Moo, as his grandchildren knew him, proudly allowed them to drive his prized tractors through parades and tractor drives. He enjoyed fishing trips with his grandkids and spending time at their home near Platte Creek. Gary was passionate for his love of auctioning and blessed to see his two oldest grandsons acquire the title of Colonel last June.

Grateful for sharing his life is wife, Carol; mother, Kathryn Wieman; sons, Kevin (Karri) and Michael (Shelly); grandchildren, Cody, Kristen, Lane, & Levi, all of Marion; a brother, Rich (Louise) Harrisburg; a sister, Dianne (John) VanHeerde of San Antonio TX, sister in law, JoAnne Oxford, Rapid City; a brother in law, Steve (Renee) McAmis, Belle Fourche; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and mentor Earl Wieman.
