"MIRIAM (HEETLAND) STAFFORD

Miriam is the daughter of Leona and Jerry Heetland. She is a 1936 graduate of Lakota High School, and had two years of teachers training at the University of Dubuque. She taught school at the Grant Consolidated School, the Buffalo Center School, District No. 6 of Ledyard Township, and was the first hometown teacher to teach in the Lakota Public School System, 1947-1951.

Miriam was united in marriage to Lawrence "Larry" Stafford in August of 1941. Larry was an employee of J. E. Ukena until June of 1942 when he left for the U.S. Armed Services. On his discharge in 1946, he returned to the Ukena Hardwarde Store. In 1949 he became manager of the Thompson Yards Lumber Company, later becoming manager of the Armstrong Lumber Yard and the Lumber Yard in Yankton, South Dakota. Later they moved to Galena, Illinois where Larry owned the Galena Lumber Company and Miriam resumed teaching.

They have two children: Tom, who operates the lumber yard in Galena, and Nancy, who lives with her family in Denver, Colorado.

Larry died in 1980, and Miriam now resides in Tropic Star Park, Pharr, Texas, where she is seasonally employed.
