Verna Amaula Truax, age 106, formerly of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of William and Matilda (Brocka) Dring on April 26, 1905, on a farm north of Parkersburg. She received her education from a rural country school Monroe Township near her home.

On September 28, 1926, Verna was united in marriage with Leslie Edward Truax at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. In those days in order to take on your husband's last name it was required that the marriage take place in the county the license was issued. So they had an additional ceremony at four corners in Butler County.

The first year of marriage the couple made their home near Hampton, Iowa, where they worked for various farm places. They moved to Parkersburg and owned and operated Truax Plumbing and Heating where they also sold and repaired televisions and Verna did all of the bookkeeping. In 1948 they built a service station on the northwest part of Parkersburg that they owned and operated.

Verna was a member of First Congregational Church and enjoyed being active with the Women's Guild. In her spare time she enjoyed crocheting, knitting and sewing.

On Wednesday, May 11, 2011, Verna died at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Grundy Center, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded by her husband, Leslie in May of 1969; her parents; a grandson, Terry Lee Truax in December of 1999; one brother, Leslie Dring; four sisters, Opal in infancy, Marlys Young, Audrey Wilkenson and Lylas Lindeman.

Verna is survived by one son, Donald (Darlene) Truax of Parkersburg; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; and many great great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 13, 2011, at First Congregational Church with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery both in Parkersburg.

Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. Friday until services at the church. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg.

Memorials may be directed to the Deacon Fund at First Congregational Church.
