"Ex-Benson fire, police chief dies

BENSON - Harold J. Strauch, 58, of 206 Church St., former police and fire chief in Benson, died at 7:45 a.m. yesterday (June 14, 1983) at his home of an apparant heart attack.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Benson, the Rev. Phil Geieske and the Rev. Knute Kinross officiating. Burial will be at the Clayton Township Cemetery, near Benson, with rites accorded by the Benson American Legion.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Remmert Funeral Home, Roanoke, and an hour before the service at the church.

He was born July 24, 1924, at Washburn, a son of William and Emma Heck Strauch. He married Mary Lavonne Yount Feb. 26, 1946, in Benson. She survives.

Also surviving are his mother, Washburn; a son, Gregory E., Brighton, Colo.; two daughters, Mary E. Kearfott, Benson, and Jaunita A. Ahrends, Minonk; a brother, Art, Washburn; two sisters, Viola Ahrens, Peoria, and Mary Loll McKee; and eight grandchildren.

A sister and his father preceded him in death.

He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church.

He was police chief in Benson for 25 years and served as fire chief for 29 years.

Mr. Strauch served in the Air Force during World War II and was a member and past commander of the Benson American Legion.

A self-employed electrician, he was a member of the Electricians Union Local 34.

He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, helped the Benson Boy Scouts, and was a Republican precinct committeeman.

Memorials may be made to the Benson Fire and Ambulance Fund."
