"Mrs. Ben Lamfers -- was born Anje Popkes. Both she and her husband Ben were born in the Netherlands. There they grew up and, in 1887, were married. Seven children were born, three died in infancy. In 1903, after sixteen years of married life, Mr. Lamfers died. Three years later their sixteen year old daughter died.

Three of Mrs. Lamfer's sisters were already living in the United States, and knowing the difficulties involved in raising a family without a father in the Netherlands, they encouraged her to come to America. First she went to Illinois where her sisters were, and about a year later Mrs. Lamfers and her family moved to Lyon County by train. The boys were then old enough to do farm work and they farmed south of the Hope Reformed Church for several years.

Mrs. Lamfers was fifty-five years of age when she came to America, yet she learned to read and write English very well. She lived to be eighty-seven.

Her children were Ralph, who was sixteen when they came to America (married Essie Stubbe); Tobe (married Lucy Schmidt); and Susie (Mrs. Will Boomgarden)."
