Jacob J. Agena was born December 13, 1865 in Ostel, Ostfriesland, Germany. There he grew to young manhood. He came to America in 1882 when he was 17 years of age. He first lived in Peoria, Illinois where he worked on a farm. He then went to Hasting, Nebraska where he was again employed on a farm for several years. For two years he attended Hastings College. Then he went to Dubuque Presbyterian Seminary to prepare himself for the ministry. He graduated in 1902 and took a small church in Boscobel, Wisconsin.

It was at this time he met Louis Boebel of Boscobel who was organist of the church of which he had become pastor. Louise Katherine Boebel was born in Woodmen, Wisconsin and spent her early years there.

On November 5, 1903 she was married to Rev. Jacob Agena.

They lived first in Boscobel where he served the church for three and a half years. Then in Ackley, Iowas where he served as pastor for 15 years.

In December 1920 he accepted a call to Germantown Presbyterian Church northwest of Lennox, SD. He served this congregation for seven years until he was taken ill and forced to give up the ministry.

There were 8 children; Alfred, Meint, Ruth, Edwin, Joe, Andrew, Elmore and Frieda. Rev Agena passed away Feb. 1, 1941 at the age of 75. Mrs. Agena lived in Lennox for several more years but was residing in Sioux Falls at the time of her death on Sept 15, 1945.
