Mathilda was born on a farm in Turner county, near Chancellor to Henry and Fannie (DeVries) Mundhenke. She attended rural school, grew to womanhood there and assisted her parents on the farm.

Mathilda married Folkert Heije Poppens on Oct. 2, 1923 in Turner County, SD. Donald Sylvester, Evelyn, Lenora, Edwin and Arlene were born to this union.

For two years the couple farmed near Chancellor and then moved to their own farm seven miles north of Lennox. There they continued farming operations, for 25 years, retiring in 1950 and taking up their residence in Sioux Falls, where she had since lived.

She was an active and faithful member of First Reformed church.

Before becoming ill in October, 1983, she especially enjoyed gardening, volunteer work with the Senior Citizens, and babysitting for friends and relatives.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son Donald, on Dec. 6, 1979, a daughter-in-law, Clara Ann Poppens, on Sep. 20, 1982; a great-grandson, Brian Poppens, on Oct. 9, 1982; three sisters, Annie Dreesman, Minnie Plucker and Fannie Dirksen, two brothers, Eilert and William Mundhenke.

Mathilda attained the age of 90 years, 1 month and 25 days.

Mathilda is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Wilmer (Evelyn) Buse of rural Lennox, Mrs. Marion (Lenora) Mulder of Sheldon, IA and Mrs. Williard (Arlene) Roozenboom of Sioux Falls; one son, Edwin Poppens of Lennox; one daughter-in-law, Arlis Poppens of Lennox; 21 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Andy Mundhenke of Willow Lake, SD.
