Posted: Friday, Apr 1st, 2016

Eugene Glatzel, 93, of Brookings, died Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at Brookings Health System.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation is Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Rude's Funeral Home in Brookings. Rude's Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Eugene William Glatzel was born Jan. 11, 1923, the son of Fredrick William and Nellie Grace (Blumeyer) Glatzel, in Brookings County. He attended rural schools in the Bruce and White area. He met Doris Lenning and they were married on Sept. 15, 1946. They purchased their farm north of Brookings in Eureka Township. Their entire marriage was spent on the farm until Gene's health declined and they moved to Brookings in June 2013.

He was confirmed and married at St. Petre Lutheran Church and was a member of First Lutheran Church.

His grandsons were his life, enjoying buying them toys and lots of other stuff. Eugene and Doris enjoyed traveling to see their daughter and grandsons around the country.

They also enjoyed shopping, collecting treasures and bargains. Eugene loved to visit. He had such a soft heart for all little kids, cats, dogs and the Glatzel family reunions in Chaska, Minn.

Eugene is survived by his wife of 69 years, Doris; daughter, Janice (Curtis) Burt; three grandsons (known only to call him 'Gene'); and two great-grandsons; two sisters, Delores (Don) Haroldson and Donna Jean (Ralph) Schwartz; brother-in-law, Vernon (Jean) Lenning, as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Eugene was preceded in death by his sister, Ernola Feige; nephew, David Olson and niece, Wanda Lenning Chandler.

Condolences may be sent to the family through www.rudesfuneralhome.com."
