Funeral services were held on Sunday, January 19, in the Ramsey Reformed church with the pastor, Rev. Calvin Schnucker, officiating, and burial was made in the church cemetery. Following is the obituary read by Rev. Schnucker at theservice:

On Friday morning, January 17, 1941, at her home in German township, Mrs. Ben Heyes Sr. died of old age. She attained an age of 94 years, 2 months and 9 days. Mrs. Ben Heyes Sr., nee Icena Broesder, was born in Ostwald, Netherlands, onthe 8th day of November 1846. She was baptized and confirmed in the old Dutch Reformed church of the Netherlands. She spent all yer youth in Holland. It was there that she met and married Mr. Berend Heyes.

Eight children were born to this union, of which four, an infant of several weeks, Mr. Dick Heyes, Mrs. Engle Workman, and nine-year-old Alke, preceded the mother in death. Four others remain: Mrs. Annie Koopman of Door, Michigan; Mrs.Nancy Vander Veen, of Lakota; Mrs. Gertie Schriever, of Rockford; George, of Bancroft. Twenty four grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren and one great, great-grandchild remain as a heritage to this earth. It was on the 16thday of August, 1872, that Mr. and Mrs. Heyes were married, all of the children were born in The Netherlands.

Forty eight years ago the oldest and the father had migrated to America. Mrs. Heyes with the remaining six children, came to America and arrived at Aplington, Iowa. they lived in Butler county until 1919 when the family moved to Kossuthcounty, where Mrs. Heyes has since made her home. Seven years ago her husband died and was buried in the Ramsey cemetery. Although Mrs. Heyes was very deaf, until very recently she retain[ed] amazing memory. She was able to reciteinnumerable hymns, poems and Psalms in the Dutch language. Now after a life rich in years and descendants she has been gathered to her people.

It is amazintg to note that Mrs. Heyes, one of the oldest persons in Kossuth county, was born the year Iowa became a State, and the year the United States declared war on Mexico. Three years old she was when the gold miners and thewould-be gold miners stalked across these fertile middle-western states to the Rockies. A young lady already when the Civil War broke out in 1861. She was married the year the Modoc Indian wars broke out in Oregon. How amazingly long, yet how unbelievably short was her life."

Oostwold lies very close to Midwolda, to the east. - D.A. Navorska - xxvii Mar MMXV - Twp. 25N, Delaware Co., Cherokee Nation <>
